Introduction

May 22nd, 2011

Hey I’m Jeff (@oncefive). I’m a Masters of Architecture candidate at Rhode Island School of Design. I am also the founder of an art think-tank called Curbs & Stoops that uses interactive media to make contemporary art more accessible.

One day while coming up with curatorial scenarios, we decided to test outside of cyberspace. We tossed around ideas for using our creative network for activating a mostly-vacant building that was once a feather factory in Bushwick, Brooklyn industrial building zone. We approached the landlord who became a co-conspirator in creating an open arts community – The Active Space. A month after writing our proposal to curate the community, we opened the doors for a Bushwick community art walk called Beat Nite. This project is now lead by new media artist Ashley Zelinskie.

In a series of interactions that took only a couple of months, I learned how to:

1. Use a digital platform to generate interest for a cause and cultivate an audience.
2. Barter/trade/negotiate to create multi-beneficial business and collaborative programming.
3. Crowd source projects to ‘start-up’.

Start by going to the next step to learn more about Open City. Once you get the hang of it, join in on conversations surrounding the issues you care about.

(Note: Open City is meant to get your juices going as far as design thinking. It is a flexible system that you can adapt as you see fit.)
