New Bedford Housing Village Housing and Aggregation Fall 2008
The site is an underused 3.5 acre lot near the heart of a low density urban city.
My goals in this New Bedford, MA site was to enforce the street edge on the north-east part of the site, adjacent to the city's historic center, while allowing an amount of porosity on the south western part of the site towards the picturesque docks of the New Bedford Harbour.
I introduced three new housing types: Duplex apartments with retail at the ground level, a student housing court, and artist villas. An extension of the historic street composes the main longitudinal organization. This axis becomes a woonerf. A street where pedestrians and vehicles cohabitate. The aggregation of the villas create a grid which define a series of event spaces within a larger public context.
